The Pendleton bookshop: a historic gem in south carolina

Hey, y’all,

Recently I had the pleasure of speaking at The Pendleton Bookshop in historic Pendleton, South Carolina. Housed in a former general store on the town square, TPB is exactly what a bookstore should be: wide, wood-planked floors, shelves of books, fireplaces, kids’ spaces, and an incredible collaboration on the second story of the building with an art museum space—Carson Gould in the Rafter Room at the Pendleton Bookshop. In addition to art, there are items from regional makers and gifts for sale. I tell you what: if I was holding any sort of event in the Clemson/Anderson/Pendleton area, this is where I’d hold it!

Owner and bookseller Amy Albright is warm and welcoming, just like her space. And her wonderful patron-readers showed me what a loyal, curious, and smart crew they are with their great questions. I’m so grateful they all chose to spend time with THE MINIATURIST’S ASSISTANT and me!

P.S. While in Pendleton, I stopped by for a visit at historic St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where my grandparents are buried. Established in 1819, it’s a beautiful church and churchyard where several famous folks are laid to rest, too: Floride Bonneau Calhoun (wife of Vice President John C. Calhoun), Thomas Green Clemson and Anna Maria Calhoun (his wife), and diplomat William Henry Trescot, among other lauded South Carolinians.
