Book Rec: When we were feral by shasta grant
We’re on our annual framly (friends + family) beach vacation, and this means I get to read LOTS of books… usually the books I’ve been waiting to read for when I had this particular time and space.
I read many, many books for work—research for my own novels, books to review, books by friends. My literary indie publisher, Regal House Publishing, has put out so many stellar books I’m incredibly far behind on reading them all. And, honestly? I’m an oldest daughter who likes to do who homework, so it kills me to have so many books by authors I admire unread.
All this being said, I just finished Shasta Grant’s When We Were Feral, a 1990s, New Hampshire-set novel full of the trials and tribulations, fierce beauty, and brutality of girlhood. It’s also a story of mothers and daughters—so it’s particularly poignant and sensory-heavy (in the ways the best-written books are) for those of us who are daughters and mothers both. I’m sharing it with all my ’90s girlies over on Instagram, so be sure to check out my stories!
