Bookstores & More: Off the (typically) beaten path in charleston, sc
There are so many great places to go a bit off the (typically) beaten path when one makes a visit to Charleston, South Carolina.
Last week while on book tour in Charleston for The Miniaturist’s Assistant, I was lucky to spend time in the Elliotborough neighborhood, where I met owner and bookseller Jenny Ferrara of Philosophers and Fools. This bookstore is so cool: It’s Charleston’s only bookstore AND bar! While perusing the shop, I bought The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters, got gifted some great sticker swag, and caught sight of my friend Kimberly Brock’s The Fabled Earth on the shelf.
In hopping (and super-cute) North Charleston, I met owner and bookseller Christen Thompson at Itinerate Literate Books. (And mama: She had her baby girl on her hip and her mom in to pinch-hit. Boy, do I remember those days.) She gave me some great swag, I nabbed a copy of Grady Hendrix’s How to Sell a Haunted House, and got some great book recommendations from Christen and her mom. Itinerate Literate is a breath of fresh, inclusive air.
My husband and I topped off the evening with yummy pizza and a giant salad at Evo Pizzeria. (Thanks for the dinner rec, Jenny!)
When you visit Charleston, don’t forget there’s so much more to explore than just downtown: All kinds of artisans are making good and authentic lives, and feeding us all.
