Historical fiction-fest at sweet luncheonette
Oh, what a sweet day! It was heaven to spend the afternoon at Sweet Luncheonette in St. Mary’s, Georgia with historical novelists—and all-around cool cats—Kaia Alderson (In a League of Her Own), Madeline Martin (The Book Lover’s Library), and Laura Morelli (The Keeper of Lost Art).
Sponsored by the fabulous GJ Ford Bookshop (St. Simon’s Island, GA), our historical fiction event was held in Sweet Luncheonette, a micro-bakery (though there’s nothing micro about it!) in the charming river town of St. Mary’s. Owner, chef, and sommelier Stephanie Chain (along with her husband, Willie) made us all feel so special, feted, and utterly at home, with delicious charcuterie, sweet treats, mimosas and more. The space is gorgeous.
We had a great crowd—complete with dear friends of mine who popped in on their way to the beach! (It’s always a joy to see folks you know on the road.) I know I’ve said this before, but I continue to be delighted by the smart, curious, and insightful questions readers of historical fiction ask at these events. They know their stuff, and they want to know more! Also: I was so enthralled with my co-panelists’ answers to the questions that I’d forget that I had to answer them, too… that I was also an author.
When it came time to leave, I didn’t want to go. And not only because I had a 5-hour drive ahead of me. It’s such a treat to spend time with other historical novelists, to talk life and this weird, wonderful job we all have. I loved getting to know Kaia, Madeline, and Laura, and we have plans to meet again!
Sweet Luncheonette is a special place. And GJ Ford Bookshop has signed copies of all our books in stock, so be sure to add both to your list of places to visit in the Golden Isles of Georgia—you will not regret it!
Next stop, Columbia, SC, to bunk down with my aunt for a brief respite before heading to Davidson, NC and to Main Street Books with Meagan Church on May 27th.
