review of the miniaturist’s assistant in the post & courier (Charleston, SC)

I’m thrilled that Charleston long and lauded newspaper, The Post & Courier, reviewed The Miniaturist’s Assistant in their recent Sunday edition! I think Gamble, Tolliver, and Daniel are grinning together somewhere in time.

I walked hundreds of miles through the incomparable city of Charleston, South Carolina; lived there, and spent years exploring and researching the city’s history for the novel. But as a born-and-bred South Carolinian with long ties to the state and the city, I’ve longed to see my work in The Post & Courier. To have it reviewed so thoughtfully, sharply, and beautifully by writers Jonathan Haupt and E Achurch — well, this is better than a snow day with no school.

I love so much about their review, but am especially proud and grateful for this: “Crawford excels particularly at the vexing moral dilemmas Gamble confronts, her unflinching discussions of race relations and the relationship she forges with Daniel…” and “Crawford’s deftly researched and compellingly crafted story offers the hope that radical optimism can be rewarded and that positive change and growth over time is indeed possible — for individuals, families, communities, and our shared humanity.”
